St David's makes History

On Sunday 29th August 2004 St David's Parish Church entered the pages of Glasgow's history by being the first Parish Church in living memory to host the 'Kirkin of the Council'.

This annual event, which is usually held in Glasgow Cathedral, is a service of dedication for council. On the initiative of Glasgow's Lord Provost, Councillor Elizabeth Cameron M.A.*, the Presbytery of Glasgow agreed that during the first year of a new council the Kirkin would be held in Glasgow Cathedral but would move to Parish Churches across the city in subsequent years.

COUNCILLOR LIZ CAMERON MA

During the service Councillor Cameron spoke to the children of the Sunday School about the city's original moto (Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of the Word and the praising of His Name) and of her duties as Glasgow's Lord Provost, emphasising her role as an ambassador and servant of the people of Glasgow.

Later in the service she read the New Testament lesson and took the opportunity to express her gratitude to the congregation for the warm welcome given by St David's to the council.

* Councillor Liz Cameron was unanimously appointed Lord Provost for four years in May 2003. As Lord Provost she is also the Lord Lieutenant of the City of Glasgow i.e. she is the Queen’s representative in Glasgow.

NB The term "Lord" Provost still applies to Elizabeth Cameron's position, Lady Provost being the title of the Lord Provost's wife. There is no reciprocal title for the spouse of a female provost.
